The manufacturer of Environotes, Roaring Spring Paper Products, was founded over 100 years ago and is one of the oldest, largest, and greenest independently owned manufacturers of notebooks in America.
Roaring Spring Paper collects, separates, and recycles any waste materials- like paper, plastic, metal and cardboard— that are used in the manufacturing of their notebooks. These materials are then turned into useful products again.
The paper they use to make their notebooks is also one of the most renewable and recycled resources available. Every product in the Environotes line is made from paper that contains a minimum of 30% Post Consumer Waste (PCW) paper. PCW is important because it’s paper that’s already been used, recycled, and used again. It keeps even more paper out of landfills while protecting old growth forests from being cut down. The 30% PCW is an important percentage to watch in recycled notebooks because it is the U.S. Government’s standard on what is a REAL recycled product.
Roaring Spring Paper Products launched a company wide recycling program with a massive goal to reduce landfill waste by 98 percent. This was estimated by experts to take the company over a year to accomplish. Within two months of starting the project RSPP reduced manufacturing waste by 92 percent. This is due to the dedication of the Recycling Team and also the commitment that Roaring Spring and its employees have to creating a cleaner environment. A major part of the plant waste is material trimmed from ‘raw’ product coming into the plant and from finished products that also are trimmed. Then there is plastic. RSPP was sending its plastic film or plastic shrink wrap to the land fill where it would require a minimum of 50-60 years to break down. There were also four and five tractor-trailer loads of waste products leaving the plant each week. Through research and hard work the Recycling Team was able to find a recycling firm that RSPP has partnered with to help with these issues. Since partnering the truckloads of waste have been reduced to one per month. The paper and plastic both are now being recycled which means they are no longer laying in the landfill. Roaring Spring Paper Product's recycling program has saved: 25,889 trees, 11 million gallons of water, 4,690.5 cubic yards of landfill space, 6.4 million KW of electricity and 93.809 pounds of air pollutants.
Currently RSPP is operating at 98 percent landfill free.
