From proper tree pruning techniques to building strategies that save energy, water, and money, San Francisco has rolled out several 'Green' initiatives:

Environmental Justice
Environmental justice is the fair treatment and meaningful involvement of all people, regardless of race, ethnicity, income, or education level, in environmental decision-making.

Zero Waste
Zero waste is complete waste reduction & reuse followed by total composting and recycling by all producers and consumers. It is a full system redesign to achieve maximum resource efficiency and sustainable economic development.

Toxics Reduction
Products containing untested and/or dangerous chemicals are sold to unsuspecting consumers every day, and used by services like dry cleaners, pest control companies, and landscape maintenance crews. The toxics reduction program makes available the most practical and informative solutions for our citizens to protect themselves and the environment.

Energy
Each year, San Francisco spends approximately one billion dollars on energy and produces 9.7 million tons of green house gases

Air Quality & Transportation
Automobiles are the largest contributor to San Francisco Bay Area air quality problems.

Eco Products & Services
Virtually everything we buy has an impact on the environment, from something as small as a birthday card to something as big as a shiny new car.

Urban Nature
The city counts itself lucky to be surrounded by natural wonders and resources, and feels a special responsibility to the care and preservation of every tree, animal, and open space in San Francisco.

Water
How we use water and what we do with it when we're done are crucial questions that every city has to ask itself. Here in San Francisco, we all share a responsibility to protect our reservoirs, the bay, the ocean, the city sewer system, and the health of all living things that come in contact with them.
