KYOCERA Provides 'Eco-Lessons' |
|
Kyocera Corporation's environmental protection-themed 'Eco-Lessons', part of the company's Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities have been provided to over 23,000 students at primary schools as of June 2010. The scale of the activity will further be expanded, with the aim of offering the lessons at over 250 schools in Japan and China over the coming year, an increase of 1.5 times the number of the previous year.
The Eco-Lessons, which are taught by specially trained Kyocera Group employees, incorporate original experimentation kits and toys utilizing solar cells, a fun quiz and other interactive activities so that students can enjoy the learning experience. Kyocera has been offering the lessons in order to enhance children's awareness of environmental issues and interest in alternative energy, and to foster an eco-friendly perspective in the next generation. The evolution of the current Eco-Lesson program began when Kyocera constructed its new global headquarters building in Kyoto, Japan in 1998 with a large-scale solar power generating system consisting of 1,896 solar panels. At the time, many local schools would request to visit the facilities and showroom displays on field trips to learn about solar power. In response to the level of public interest, and with the cooperation of an environmental education course for primary school students that was being run by the Kyoto Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Kyocera took the initiative to start proactively offering environmentally themed classes at local schools in February 2003, and since then the lessons have spread across Japan, and the program was also introduced in China in 2009. As of June 2010, over 20,000 students in Japan and 3,000 students in China have received the lesson. The pioneering concept is designed as a grassroots educational activity to teach children about environmental awareness. Characteristics and Overview of the Eco-Lessons Kyocera Group Eco-Lessons have a unique characteristic; the lessons are taught by the company's employees who have been trained as instructors at an in-house training program. An instructor training course has been set up where employees learn the aim and significance of the classes, as well as how to speak, behave, and carry out the lessons. Employees generally teach the lessons in teams of two.
From April of this year to March 2011, 120 instructors from 26 Kyocera locations plan to provide lessons at 240 primary schools across Japan, and 4 instructors from group companies are to visit 18 schools in China.
